Hopefully those of you who read this blog should know by now that we are a very positive family. We try to take time out to enjoy and appreciate the small things everyday and we always look for the best in every situation. This is the mind set that we are trying to instil in both Max and Lucia, along with the confidence that they can do whatever they want to do and be whoever they want to be.
When it comes to Lucia’s Lymphoedema we hope we are teaching her that nothing is impossible – yes there might be a little modification here or there – but ultimately we want her to know she can do the same things as her friends.
I remember vividly when Lucia was first diagnosed with Lymphoedema at only a few months old. We were told very little about the condition as the doctors pretty much knew nothing, so we turned to the internet. I remember being in tears night after night reading horribly, scary stories about Lymphoedema and fearing for my little girl’s future.
We could find nothing online of any use to us – it was all worst case scenarios and the pictures were terrifying. So my googling had to stop as it was doing us more harm than good.
Now however, there are more and more positive stories coming out. People who are living with the condition and excelling. People who are living with it and not letting it define them or get in the way of who they are. People who are continuing to do what they want to do regardless of their Lymphoedema. People who are so inspiring for me to read about and use as role models for Lucia.
So I thought I’d use this post to highlight a few of those that I have been reading about recently and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. I would also love them to know just how much their story means to me as a parent of a child with Lymphoedema and how much it will mean for Lucia growing up.
These people will be wonderful examples to help us teach Lucia that she is a strong and powerful little lady who can do anything she wants to do and be anyone she wants to be. These people are the proof that Lymphoedema doesn’t win.
